Lucky  is a mink coloured hamster that was born on Christmas Eve, 1999. Now normally, I like to get to know an animal before I name it, but when we selected Lucky at the pet store, her name just sort of followed the story the clerk had to tell us. It was a very busy day in the store when Lucky was born, and no one noticed that the female hamster was giving birth. By the time they discovered the babies, 10 out of 15 had been killed by other hamsters in the cage. Lucky was one of the survivors. You know, they say that hamsters make excellent pets for children. I have a problem with this. They are nocturnal, so unless you want your child up all night, they never even SEE the hamster. I make it a point to get Lucky out of her cage each night so she can say goodnight to my girls.

December, 2001.

Lucky died in my hands, I went to check on her and she was not doing well, I could tell. I held her until she passed away, and I think that she felt better that way, better than being alone. Because of the lack of frost this year, I was able to bury her along with our other beloved and lost friends, the Cat, Mickey, Emily, KP and Fireball. Hamsters usually live about 2 years. Lucky lived for 23 months, so I feel that we did okay with her. I will miss her.
